I lost my seed phrase: what is still possible?
If you have lost your seed phrase, what is still possible depends entirely on one thing: whether you can currently access the wallet. A lost recovery phrase cannot be reconstructed from your wallet address; the maths only runs one way. If you still have access, the answer is straightforward: create a new wallet with a fresh phrase and move your funds to safety. If you have no access and no backup, the funds are usually unreachable, and anyone who contacts you promising to recover a lost phrase for a fee is running a scam.
First, which situation are you in?
"I lost my seed phrase" means several different things, and the right response is different for each. Work out which one applies before doing anything.
- You lost the written phrase but can still access the wallet (it is open on a device, or you remember the password). This is recoverable: you act now to secure the funds.
- You lost the phrase and have no access, with no backup anywhere. This is the hard case, and usually unrecoverable.
- You forgot a password, but the phrase is intact. The phrase is what matters; restore from it.
- The phrase was seen or shared with someone else. That is a different emergency, a compromise, covered in our guide to an exposed seed phrase.
If you still have access: act now
This is the good case, and it is time-sensitive only in that access can end unexpectedly, a device dies, an app logs out, so do it today.
Create a brand-new wallet with a fresh recovery phrase, generated on a device you trust, and write that new phrase down and store it safely before you do anything else. Our guide to protecting a seed phrase covers how.
Move your funds from the old wallet to the new one. Because you still have access, you can send everything out. Once the funds are in the new wallet, the lost phrase for the old one no longer matters.
Do not try to "recover" the old phrase first. You do not need it. Moving the funds to a wallet whose phrase you do hold solves the problem completely.
If you have no access and no backup
Here the honest answer is the hard one. A wallet's funds are controlled by its private key, which is derived from the recovery phrase. If the phrase is gone, there is no backup, and the wallet is not open anywhere, then nobody, no company, no service, no "expert", can regenerate it. The security that makes self-custody strong is exactly what makes a truly lost phrase final.
Before concluding it is gone, check the realistic possibilities, which are all about finding an existing copy, not recreating one:
- A written or metal backup you made and forgot: a safe, a drawer, a document, with a trusted person.
- A device that still has the wallet installed and logged in, where you can view or move funds without re-entering the phrase.
- A password or encrypted backup the wallet software itself offers (some wallets keep an encrypted local backup tied to a password).
- A wallet-specific recovery option documented by that wallet provider, if one exists.
If none of these exist, the funds are, in all likelihood, permanently inaccessible. That is painful, and it is the truth.
Can a wallet address reveal my seed phrase?
No. This is worth stating plainly because scammers prey on the hope that it can. A wallet address and a recovery phrase are linked by one-way maths: the phrase produces the address, but the address cannot produce the phrase. Anyone claiming they can derive, "scan", or recover your seed phrase from your public address is lying, and the claim is the scam.
The scams that target this exact moment
People who have lost access are a prime target, so expect approaches and know the shape of them.
A "seed phrase recovery service" that, for a fee or your details, promises to regenerate your lost phrase. It cannot be done; the fee is the fraud. Fake wallet support, posing as Ledger, MetaMask, Trezor, or your wallet, offering to "restore" access, usually by getting you to enter your phrase into a site (which hands over any wallet you do still control) or to install remote-access software. And "specialist" recovery experts on social media or in search ads making the same promise. The rule is simple: no legitimate service recovers a lost seed phrase, and no legitimate support ever needs you to enter your phrase or share your screen. Our guide on spotting a recovery scam covers these.
Protect yourself in future
Whatever the outcome this time, the fix going forward is backup, not recovery. Write your recovery phrase on paper or stamped metal, store copies in more than one safe place, never store it as a photo or a cloud note, and consider whether a reputable hardware wallet suits how you hold crypto. Our guide to protecting your seed phrase covers safe backups without creating new exposure.
Red flags
- Any service promising to recover or regenerate a lost seed phrase for a fee
- A claim that your phrase can be derived or "scanned" from your wallet address
- "Support" asking you to enter your recovery phrase on a website
- A request to install screen-sharing or remote-access software to "restore" access
- Recovery "experts" who contacted you, or who advertise in search or social
What this guide cannot do
It cannot regenerate a truly lost phrase; nobody can, and promising otherwise would be a lie that leads straight to a second loss. What it can do is help you act fast if you still have access, which is the case where everything can be saved, confirm which existing backups are worth checking, and make sure that in a vulnerable moment you are not handed to the people who exploit it.

Frequently asked questions
Can a wallet address reveal my seed phrase?
No. The link is one-way: a recovery phrase produces an address, but an address cannot produce the phrase. Anyone claiming they can derive, scan, or recover your seed phrase from your public address is lying, and that claim is itself the scam.
Can a recovery service find my lost seed phrase?
No. If the phrase is genuinely lost, with no backup and no access to the wallet, no service can regenerate it, because the security that protects self-custody also makes a lost phrase final. A "seed phrase recovery service" that charges a fee is a scam.
What should I do if I still have access but lost the written phrase?
Act today, because access can end unexpectedly. Create a brand-new wallet with a fresh recovery phrase, write that new phrase down safely, and move all your funds from the old wallet to the new one. Once the funds are in a wallet whose phrase you hold, the lost phrase no longer matters.
Is a password the same as a seed phrase?
No. A password usually unlocks the wallet app on your device, while the recovery phrase controls the funds themselves and can restore the wallet anywhere. If you forgot a password but still have the phrase, you can restore from the phrase. If you lost the phrase, a password alone cannot regenerate it.
Someone offered to help me restore my wallet. Is it safe?
Be very wary, especially if they contacted you. No legitimate support or service needs you to enter your recovery phrase on a website or to install screen-sharing software, and none can recover a truly lost phrase. Reach your wallet provider only through its official website, and never share your phrase or screen.
